Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to be Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea in the days of Jesus? He was conflicted about sentencing Jesus to death but gave in to the mob calling for Jesus to be crucified.
When we recite the Apostles’ Creed, there is a line that says Jesus suffered “under Pontius Pilate”. This statement points out the historical fact that Jesus was condemned to suffer and die by the governing authority of that day. Pilate represented the Roman government, and his judgment made Jesus’ sentencing and suffering an official event in history. Through his wimpy character and judgment, Pilate who was afraid of the priests and of the screaming of people, made a horrible decision that changed the world forever.
Jesus took on the condemnation we deserve. By his suffering, we have God’s grace to cover us with his righteousness and fellowship with God forever. God used Jesus’ suffering and death to redeem us. What amazing love!
Personal Worship Option:
God, thank you for sending your Son to suffer and die for us. Thank you for your amazing love and grace. Amen.
