Devotion:
Read John 6:66-68.
Tomorrow is the day our nation celebrates our independence. Throughout the year, one of the ways we show our commitment and gratitude to our country is by repeating the pledge of allegiance to our flag. Some Christians believe that it is not appropriate for us to make that pledge. I believe it is appropriate, but only with the understanding that my ultimate allegiance is to Jesus Christ my Lord.
Allow me to repeat a statement I wrote in our devotion yesterday: When we pledge allegiance to Jesus Christ, we are making a commitment to learn and follow his way, no matter how difficult that may be at times. There have been times (and is still true today) when the ways and values of our nation have not been in line with the way of Christ. In those situations, Christians have to decide where their ultimate loyalty lies.
In the passage from “The Gospel According To John” Jesus inquires with his disciples as to whether they are going to be loyal to him. Some of his teaching had caused some disciples (he had many more than twelve) to turn away from following him. To be sure, there were many things that Jesus did and taught that caused people to not want to follow him. His way was too difficult for them. In this scene, Peter assures him that they continue to believe in and follow him. May our pledge of allegiance to him always be solid as well.
Personal Worship Option:
What are some of the teachings and ways of Jesus that make it difficult for you to follow him? Pray for wisdom and courage to stay true to your pledge.
