Devotion:
Read Psalm 24.
Psalm 24 is a beautiful song of adoration and worship to God. It’s said that this psalm was sung on the first day of each week in the Temple services. The psalm opens by declaring that the entire earth is God’s, including everything in it:”The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” We are stewards or caretakers of this earth. We are caretakers of our possessions and the resources we have, but they are not ours. They are God’s. And we, all who live in it are God’s.
God values what he owns, and what happens in this world matters to him. We honor God by caring for his creation and his people. David called on the people of Jerusalem to honor God by praising him. Over and over again, David calls God the King of glory. Glory means God is worthy of our praise, lives, and worship. The people of David’s day praised God as they walked to the Temple. Imagine David or a priest calling out, “Who is the King of glory?” And the people answering, “The Lord, strong and mighty!” And then the priest called out, “Who is the King of Glory?” And the people responded, “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies!” The exchange was repeated and then the gates swung open for all to enter and worship God together.
This hymn is an invitation to worship God the Creator and proclaim his glory. How would our worship services look today if we all arrived celebrating the King of Glory with joy and songs of praise? Choose today to honor God by caretaking his earth and all that lies within and proclaiming him the King of Glory.
