Devotion:
Read Psalm 19.
The psalmist reminds us that the heavens constantly declare God’s glory. All that we need to do to be reminded of God’s presence and glory is to go outside and look up at the sky, blue and clear, or watch white fluffy clouds driven gently by the wind. Even darkened skies before a storm remind us of God’s glory. And the rainbow that follows the rain reminds us of the covenant God made with Noah not to destroy creation again with a flood.
I vividly recall going for a walk alone on our farm one cold and perfectly clear winter night, just before Christmas, when I was a young boy. As I walked along a high ridge, I could barely see the faint lights of our little town far away on the horizon. Today, we are inundated at night by lights of all kinds, but out in the country on that night, there were no lights at all around me, and it was dark…except for the stars. I have never seen so many bright and beautiful stars! Some of them looked so close that it was almost as if I could reach up and touch them. As I stood gazing at that night sky, I felt God’s presence and sensed something of God’s glory. I need to let myself be a child like that more often.
Personal Worship Option:
Pray with me, “Gracious God, you reveal yourself to us in all of creation and especially when we look up and see the beauty of the heavens. The huge expanse of the sky makes us feel small, but then we remember you and your glory and your great love for us. Thank you, Amen!”
