Devotion:
Read Isaiah 61:1-3.
Bible scholars say that the book of Isaiah could have easily been divided into at least two books, if not three (like 1 and 2 Kings). The reason for this is because the first 39 chapters offer a message of warning and gloom: judgment and exile is coming. Then, beginning at chapter 40, words of comfort and assurance are the norm. At that point, the prophet is offering God’s message during the time of the exile. Here in chapter 61 are words of good news about both the present and the future. The Spirit of God is letting the people know of God’s continuing presence with and love for them, and because of that, better days are ahead.
While that prophet most likely saw that message as being primarily for the people of Judah, Jesus later saw these same verses as another way to state his mission, not just for a certain group of people, but for the whole world. And while he came to reach all people, he was especially focused on the least, the last, the lost and the lonely. That mission is certainly in line with God’s mission throughout the Bible, to seek justice and connection with those most in need.
The Holy Spirit constantly invites you and me and everybody else to communicate this message with those who are disconnected from God or who are in need and wonder why God is not providing for them. Pay attention to those “nudges of the Spirit” and opportunities provided to share “good news with the poor, comfort for those who mourn, freedom for those imprisoned” in any way. If you have a heart and desire to share that message, be assured the Spirit will help you communicate it.
Personal Worship Option:
Take some time to pray and think about who the poor, the grieving and the prisoners are around you. With whom do you sense the Spirit is inviting you to communicate God’s message?
