Devotion:

I love watching sports, especially on the college level. One of the most enjoyable aspects for me is watching a player develop during their time with the team. In basketball, a tall player may be rather awkward and uncoordinated in their movements around the basket. But after a while, you can tell that coaches have worked with them and they have learned some new footwork and moves that allow them to easily maneuver around the defense. Maybe another player doesn’t have good form as they shoot the ball, but then you notice that shot has changed and they have practiced it a lot, so that they are a much better player by the time they complete their eligibility to play.

Yes, some coaches are better than others at developing and improving the skills of players, but the other key part of that equation is the willingness on behalf of the player to change. Some players don’t want to be coached. They don’t want to change. They are satisfied with the way they play and want to be left alone. Also, coaches can be rather harsh in their criticism of the players and not all players can accept that.

Paul acknowledges that what he had written in an earlier letter to the Corinthian Christians may have upset some of them. But he also emphasizes that it led them to repent, to change their ways. That is what God is always seeking from us: to change our ways and learn the way of Christ. It is not easy to change; it can even be upsetting at times. Be reminded today that it is necessary in order for God to be able to continue to create you and me to be the people of Christ.

Personal Worship Option:

What are the ways you have changed since you first gave your life to Christ?
