Devotion:
Read Isaiah 30:12-15.
My two-year-old grandson loves to build towers out of Legos. Last week he built a large tower, picked it up, and began carrying it to me. While the base seemed secure, the top began to wobble and shake so he ran faster and faster until the tower toppled to the floor. This shaky tower reminds me of the tower of sin Judah built. The people of Judah had hardened their hearts to the things of God. God had offered to save them from the Assyrians, but they had refused His help. God promised that because Judah did not wait on him and trust in him, their lives would become broken and shattered. Isaiah compares Judah’s sin of perversion and deceit as a towering, badly built wall that slowly, slowly tilts and shifts. The wall collapses suddenly and in fine pieces with no fragments left to rebuild. The passage is about Israel taking matters into their own hands, rather than trusting in the proven faithfulness of their great God. Waiting was hard for Judah and it’s hard for us. Let’s repent of our stubborn self-sufficiency that’s on display when we go ahead of God and refuse to wait on him. Let’s look for God’s outstretched hand in all of our circumstances. And let’s turn our eyes up towards our faithful God, rather than looking inward for strength. As we’re waiting for our next test result, treatment verdict, workplace decision, or relationship news… let’s shift our focus towards God. We serve a compassionate God we can trust with our future.
