Devotion:

The Biblical story of Job has some deeply meaningful lessons to teach us; powerful lessons for facing the difficulties of life. Job had lived all of his life doing his best to be faithful to God. Then a series of disasters strike him, taking away his wealth and much of his family. He is distraught. Three of his friends come to help him get through this time in the valley. They were very helpful when they just sat with him in silence. But then they started to speak and try to give him advice, at which point their attempt to help went downhill.

The verses we have read today are part of Job’s response to one of those friends. He is in a lengthy lament about what has happened, acknowledging that life can sometimes be hard and full of trouble. But in the midst of that lament comes this word of hope: “All the days of my hard service I will wait for my renewal to come.” Even though he is having to deal with much destruction and pain in his life, he still trusts that God is going to bring about renewal for him. Life will not always be like he was experiencing at that point. There might be a time of waiting, and that time can sometimes be lengthy, but there would come a time when life would change.

You may have experienced some very difficult times in your life. You may be going through a time now. In those times, it is so hard to wait. Be assured with this reminder of hope today: your time of renewal will come.
