Read Genesis 12:1-3.
I like to go back and reflect on these verses every so often and I regularly invite us as the people of Christ to do so. They take us back to the moment when God began to establish a covenant people to represent God to all the world. In light of our focus for this week, we especially lift up the last part of this initial calling: “and all people on earth will be blessed through you.”
From the beginning, God has been seeking to connect with and bless every person on this planet. I am therefore convinced that a core part of what it means to be the people of this God is to have that same desire and purpose. We cannot be focused on just “me and people like me” if we are going to represent this God. The people of God were formed to bless “all people on earth.”
What would it look like in your life for that to become a focus? How might you bless people of generations other than your own? What would it look like for you to bless people of other races? How might you be intentional to learn about another “people group” so that you can better connect with someone in that group?
I don’t believe this calling was just for Abram. It was for me and you, too.
Personal Worship Option:
Offer this prayer or one in your own words: Gracious God, I give thanks for the many ways you have blessed me throughout my life. Help me to be intentional about seeking to bless others; especially those different from me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
