Read Genesis 12:1-3.

Genesis 12:1-3 could be considered a big shift in scripture. Many key events in God’s creating and saving his people start from this passage. Before sending Abraham out on his long journey, God makes him many promises. God tells him to go, that he will guide him, and that he will take care of him.

Think of everything Abraham is leaving behind as he follows the uncertainty of God’s call, but also remember what Abraham receives as he goes. God promises that Abraham will inherit a great land and create masses of people by becoming the father of a great nation. All peoples will be blessed through him. In time God made this even clearer by sending his Son, Jesus, born as a descendant of Abraham, to be the promised Savior of the world. Abraham couldn’t have fully understood all the implications of God’s promises, but he didn’t need to. God just called him to walk forward with confidence, trusting in his word.

It is not all that different for us today. Though we have a more complete reveal of God’s plan than Abraham did, we do not see all its incredible details. This means that faith is required if we want to share God’s great blessings and create that interest of God to others.

Personal Worship Option:

Lord, thank you for your promises. We don’t know all that’s ahead of us, but we do know the One who is leading us. Help us to trust in you fully. Amen.
