Devotion:

Read Matthew 25:31-46.

In “The Gospel According To Matthew” chapter 25 concludes Jesus’ public ministry. After that, it is private time with his disciples, then moving toward his crucifixion and resurrection. It is noteworthy that Matthew ends this section of his “good news” book about Jesus with three judgment stories: ten virgins, money (talents) given to servants and this story about a final judgment scene. Matthew wants us to know that there is a decision to be made about whether to follow Jesus and there are consequences of our decision.

In this final story, the criteria for getting into heaven is whether a person served the needs of others as Jesus lived and taught us to do. Even more to the point, the statement is made by the King that it is about serving “the least of these.”

The good news of Jesus is not good news for everyone, because not everyone chooses to accept it, meaning not everyone chooses to live their life by what he taught. They stay focused on their own needs, how much they can accumulate and all they can do for themselves. However, when you choose to live this “good news” you will always have “good news” to share with others.

Personal Worship Option:

Lord Jesus, help me live your good news in how I treat people and serve the needs of others. In your name I pray, Amen.
