Devotion:

Read Genesis 27:30 - 28:5.

Today's reading in the Bible gives us insight into Esau's conversation with himself after Jacob's deceit in stealing the blessing of their father. Esau's conversations have gone from bitterness and hatred to revenge and murder. Esau is coming up with a plan, a plot for a double funeral. When their father dies, Esau plans to kill his brother. He has nursed a grudge to the point where there seems to be no turning back. Jacob’s deception damaged the relationships he had with the people around him.

Again mom, Rebekah, steps in to advise her younger son, Jacob, to run and live with her brother’s family using the excuse that he needs to find a good wife who will uphold the faith in God. Jacob should not have run from his sins and actions. We all have a tendency to keep up appearances and make ourselves look better than we are. Thankfully, God’s Spirit can work in us even when we try to run away. God pursued Jacob, and he will pursue us until his redeeming work in us is finished.

Personal Worship Option:

Faithful God, we confess our preference to run away rather than to admit our own deceitfulness and sin. Come after us, Lord. Change us to become more like Jesus. Amen.
