Devotion:

Leviticus is a book of instructions for God’s people, with special emphasis on priestly practices for worship, sacrifices, special seasons, and living together on the exodus. These instructions carried forward centuries later in the Jewish traditions and religious practices in Israel in the time of Christ. Here, in this passage that begins the book, the people are told to bring an animal from the herd or flock that is “without defect” when they prepare to make a sacrifice at the tabernacle. This may, on the surface, seem like a minor detail, but it has an important implication. If we think about the situation in which a family, with a limited number of animals, were preparing to make a sacrifice, it would only be natural to pick an animal that might not ever become fully grown, perhaps the runt of the litter or the one with a deformity or physical flaw. After all, the animal was about to be killed and burned on the altar.

But the sacrifice was to God, and the lesson is clear – only the very best is to be offered to God. We are to do the same, giving to God from our very best time, talents, creativity, and energy.

Personal Worship Option:

Reflect for a few minutes on what you are giving to God. Is it from your very best, or is it whatever is left over after other needs and priorities are met? Pray for the faith and commitment to give of your very best in worship, in service, and in loving others.
