Devotion:
Read Luke 9:51.
This verse has been called by some the “hinge” of the book. It is certainly a turning point in the story. From that point, Jesus was focused on making the journey to Jerusalem. He knew what awaited him when he arrived there, yet he did not waver from continuing and completing the trip.
I sometimes wonder about all the opportunities on that journey to stop short of his destination. The successful mission trip of the seventy-two he sent out might have caused him to think “This is where I need to stay and devote my time and energy. This ministry is about to take off!” When he healed the blind beggar or listened to the complete change in Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector, he saw more evidence of the good he was doing. When he rode into town and the crowds gathered with such excitement, he felt the temptation of popularity. When he prayed just before he was arrested, he could have snuck out of the city and continued his ministry elsewhere. But he knew where his journey was leading and he was determined to see it through to the end.
Jesus is our ultimate example of following through with what needs to be done, no matter the risk or consequences. May we who claim his name pray for the wisdom and courage we need to represent him by following his example when those times come.
Personal Worship Option:
What is God calling you to do that you know it is time to move in that direction and not waver until it gets done?
