Devotion:

Hope can be filled with eager anticipation—children waiting and hoping for the Christmas gifts that they want; teens waiting and hoping to get their driver’s license; adults waiting and hoping for the arrival of a healthy first child. There is also a more difficult side of hope. Parents waiting and hoping that their child’s prognosis is okay; applicants waiting and hoping that they get a job; students waiting and hoping that they get accepted into college.

Isaiah 40 begins with words of comfort and ends with words of hope. Those who wait on the Lord and put their hope in him will be renewed; “they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” It is a majestic sight to see an eagle high in the sky, soaring with freedom, power, and grace. We can soar because our hope is in the Lord. With God, life is never hopeless. No matter what situation we find ourselves in, we may be filled with hope, assured that God’s promises are true. All struggles can be endured with the spirit of God within us.

Personal Worship Option:

Thank you, Lord, for always watching over us. Help us to place our faith and hope in you, that we may soar like eagles, lifted up by your Spirit. Amen.
