Devotion:
Read 1 Samuel 16:14-23.
The Biblical stories of King David are fascinating to me and have been since I was a little boy. He slayed the mighty giant Goliath, was a faithful shepherd, a great king and knew the forgiveness of God, even though he had committed some terrible sins. Though he experienced power in several ways, he also knew humility.
I see that in this passage. Even though David had already been anointed by Samuel to be the next king of Israel (see verses 12-13), he was willing to be a servant for the current king. He had a musical gift that brought a sense of peace to Saul’s troubled mind and David was willing to offer that gift. And as you read further in the story, he continued to have that spirit of humility and servanthood as he related to the king until the day Saul died.
David gives us an Old Testament foreshadowing of another King who would come to show us that humble servanthood is a key characteristic of God’s people. May we who now serve that King continue to learn and live that trait.
Personal Worship Option:
The words to one of my favorite hymns is a prayer written in 1961 by Albert Bayly. Here is the first verse:
Lord, whose love through humble service bore the weight of human need,
who upon the cross, forsaken, offered, mercy’s perfect deed:
we, your servants, bring the worship not of voice alone, but heart,
consecrating to your purpose every gift that you impart.
