Devotion:
Read Psalm 130.
We all know it: we mess up at times. We sin. We do and say things (or fail to do something or say something when we should) that hurt other people and ourselves, as well as God. And just like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, we tend to want to hide. We try to hide or suppress what we have done. And the more we do that, the more of a mess we create of our life and our relationships.
However, the Bible teaches us over and over again that when we confess what we have done, we can be healed. We can be redeemed and recreated, to basically start again. We can have new life.
The primary relationship we harm when we sin is with God. The good news is, God is the One most ready to forgive us and give us this new life. God is the One who created us in the first place and God is the One who can recreate us. The Psalmist reminds us of this foundational good news: God forgives. God redeems. God recreates.
Furthermore, God is the One who can and will guide us in how to restore any broken relationships we have. But sometimes, all of this does not happen as quickly as we would like. There is a need for patience. Sometimes we have to wait as God works in mysterious ways to bring about our new life. While we wait, we can be assured of where to place our hope.
Personal Worship Option:
Put your name in place of “Israel” in verse 7:
“(Your name here), put your hope in the Lord,
for with the Lord is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption."
