Devotion:
Read John 2:1-12.
The mother of Jesus is part of the group who followed Jesus. She has simple instructions for all of us in this story: “Do whatever he tells you.” Weddings were an important part of Jewish cultures. An entire village or town often participated in the festivities. So, to perform this miracle meant that “everyone” would know that Jesus had performed this miracle. But his mother asked and he honored her by following through on her request. He honored his mother, the servants trusted and obeyed Jesus. In the end, the whole marriage party was blessed.
Adult Challenge:Sometimes that most insignificant word or action can bring about profound honor or blessing to others. How can you honor the people in your life today?
Youth Challenge:
This is one of the most well-known stories about Jesus - His first miracle, or as John described them, signs. Here we see Jesus’ mother Mary give the simple instruction to “Do whatever he tells you.” Now remember at this point Jesus hadn’t performed any “signs” and I’m sure many of the followers and guests at the wedding were confused at the orders that were given. The difference for Mary is that she knew who He was! I have found in my own walk that the more I get to know who He is, the easier it is to trust him even when He calls me to do something that seems crazy and against my own logic. But, there are still times where I lean too much on my own understanding and neglect to “Do whatever He tells me.” What are you struggling with right now? What do you need to let go of control on? What areas do you need to ask for more faith and trust in?
Children's Challenge:
This is a good example of a mom and son interaction. Jesus was not planning on doing any miracles that day, but his mom asked him to step in and help. Look at verse 4 – Jesus didn’t think it was his responsibility to help, but his mom asked him to take care of the problem. Jesus obeyed his mom, even though he was all grown up! Here are 3 ways you can honor your mom: thank her: with your words (spoken/written), serve her: with your actions, and obey her. Look for ways to do all three each day this week and in the weeks to come.
