Daily Devotion, July 10, 2020

Much of Jesus’ ministry took place around the Sea of Galilee. People traveled from all around the region to be healed and to hear him teach. Jesus was a master at communicating love and personal acceptance. He did this as he healed, taught, called the disciples, and even calmed the storm. But have you forgotten how much He loves you? Under all the papers, books, reports, memories, voices and years He is still there. His compassion compels you to come to him and to share that compassion with others.
Adult Challenge:
Who do you have trouble showing compassion? Compassion requires more than words: compassion requires action. Look for ways to express compassion to those who are starving for a tender touch.

Youth Challenge:
In Mark 1:14-22 we see these men working hard to make a living for themselves and survive. Then Jesus comes along and says stop what you are doing, leave everything and come join me on this multi year journey. And they do! They had no idea what they were getting into, but they were willing to take the first step and find out. When I was a youth I felt a strong call into ministry, but I had “my own dreams.” I was not mature enough to explore what this calling I felt meant. So, I pushed on and pursued what I wanted and failed time and time again. Finally, I stopped running and listened. Once I surrendered and followed, my life turned around and things finally started to fall into place. I often wonder where I would be if I kept running. Look what the disciples would have missed out on if they simply said, “Nah we're good. We are too busy fishing.” What does it mean to be called by Jesus now? How willing are you to drop the plans you've made for yourself to follow that call? (Remember a life of service or a life of ministry does not have to happen in a church building.)

Children's Challenge:
  • Jesus spent a lot of time either on the shore of the Sea of Galilee or in a boat on the Sea of Galilee.
  • Where has your family spent time near or on the water?
  • What do you enjoy most about being near or on the water?

After reading Mark 4:35-41, talk about how God calmed not only the Sea but the fears of the disciples. How does he do that for us?

  • Find a beach ball or floaties or toy boat (something representing the water) and play a game of hot potato. Turn the music on and start passing. Once the music stops the person holding the object then shares a time they were afraid or a time they enjoyed being at the water.
