Read Isaiah 40:1-2.
In the first thirty-nine chapters of Isaiah, the prophet is warning God’s people of the coming judgment of God through being defeated by their enemies. At chapter forty, it is obvious that defeat has come. The message of the prophet changes at this point. Now God instructs him to “Comfort, O comfort my people…”
In these verses there are statements revealing both the accountability of God as well as the support of God. In life, we all need both, from God and from people around us. We need to know that we are loved and supported, that there are those around us who “have our back.” We also need to be held accountable to our words and actions. We need those who will lovingly confront us when there is something we have done or said (or left undone or unsaid) that has brought harm to others or our self. We are also called to provide that balance for others, whether it be in our family and among our friends or among our brothers and sisters in our close relationships within the church.
Who do you have around you that provides that balance for you? And who are you intentional to offer that balance for them?
Personal Worship Option:
Offer this prayer or one in your own words: God of justice and mercy, thank you for the balance of support and accountability you give me. Help me offer and receive that same balance in my life with the people closest to me. Through Christ, Amen.
