Read 2 Timothy 4:7-8.

This is certainly not a letter written from a seaside resort, with the author on vacation and catching up on his correspondence. It is important to know the context in order to grasp the impact of the message. Paul was writing from a prison in Rome. His preliminary hearing had not gone well, and he was about to face the final trial that would likely result in his death (and in fact, did). Earlier in this letter, Paul had given young Timothy a stirring pep talk, encouraging him to serve with boldness, not timidity, and to not be ashamed of Paul, although he was a prisoner for his faith.

Today’s brief passage gives us insight into Paul’s reflection on his own life and journey. Through peril and hardship, beatings, and imprisonments, Paul has stayed true to his faith. He has finished the work he was called to do, and now a crown awaits him. Few of us will live and serve with nearly as much commitment as did Paul. But he serves even today, to me and to all Christians, as an inspiring example of staying focused on the mission and work of Jesus Christ.

Personal Worship Option:

Gracious God, help me to stay focused on the service you have gifted and called me to perform. Help me to keep the faith, to continue running the race, and to finish it with the assurance of a crown at the finish line. Amen.
