Read Hebrews 10:22-25.

While we do not know who wrote the New Testament book of Hebrews, the author was clearly writing to people who were already Christians and members of the church. Part of the author’s purpose in writing was to fight off apathy among believers. In Hebrews 2:1, the author admonishes us to pay attention to what we have heard so we do not “drift away,” using the image of an untied boat drifting in the current and away from the shore. Now in our passage for today, the author returns to that point by cautioning those of us who are in the church about “not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing.”

Attending regular worship in our church is one of the keys to staying close to God, and it is a good habit for believers. Habits form quickly when we repeat certain actions, and it is easy to get out of the habit of attending worship when we miss a few times. That is why we send cards to those who miss worship three times and call those who miss five consecutive Sundays. We are missed when we are not in worship. Someone needs our encouragement, our smile, and our greeting in Christ.

Personal Worship Option:

Take an inventory of your habit of regular worship. Are you being faithful in your attendance every Sunday? Don’t wait for the New Year to resolve to be regular, present every Sunday, and you will be blessed. So will others around you!
