Devotion:
Read Psalm 136:1-7, 25-26.
We know that many of the psalms were written to be sung and accompanied by music. In fact, the psalmist often gives instructions regarding musical arrangement and the instruments to be used for some of the psalms. While none of these instructions are written with Psalm 136, its refrain, “His love endures forever,” clearly marks it as a song. The psalmist calls us to give thanks to God, reminding us of God’s great works of creation and God’s sustaining us in life. According to this psalm, God’s motive for all this is simple -- God loves us!
As I think back over my early years, I am thankful for parents, grandparents, siblings, and so many others who helped me because they loved me. I attended a small high school that had some incredible teachers. Several of them could have taught very effectively at the university level. They knew their subjects extremely well, demanded the best from us, and prepared us well for college and careers. They clearly loved their work; but I think they must have also loved us as students. At that age we were not always easy to love, and I am so grateful to them. Human analogies of God always fail, but these recollections help me give thanks to God, knowing that God loves us always, forever!
Personal Worship Option:
Give thanks today that God loves us, and God loves you in particular. As we face decisions, sometimes we know which choice God would have us make, but it may not be the one most attractive to us. Pray for the insight and wisdom that comes from knowing that the choices God would prefer are rooted in God’s love for us.
