Devotion:

What a love story this scripture is and how it demonstrates a sacrifice if we love and want something. The custom of the day was for a man to present a dowry, or substantial gift, to the family of his future wife. Jacob’s dowry was not a material possession. Instead, he agreed to work seven years for Laban. Laban did not tell Jacob about another custom of the land. The older daughter had to be married first. By giving Leah, not Rachel, to Jacob, Laban tricked him into devoting another seven years of hard work to the family. Jacob was enraged when he learned that Laban had tricked him. The trickster who deceived Esau had been deceived himself. Although Laban tricked Jacob, Jacob kept his part of the bargain. Jacob worked seven more years to marry Rachel.

The most important goals and desires are worth working and waiting for, in our loving service to those dearest to us. We generally consider the time and effort given as gifts, very willing to sacrifice. We delight in doing for others, blessing them out of love and Christ’s love for them. Sacrifices are expected if we are faithful to our God.

Personal Worship Option:
Recall times when you have served well and perhaps for a long time. Despite the energy spent, the sacrifices, and frustrations along the way, did you find delight in loving and blessing others? Would you have changed any of the time spent? What are you willing to sacrifice to help others that are marginalized and need resources or help that requires time?
