Read Matthew 11:28-29.

Life often feels overwhelming. Between the demands of work, relationships, and personal challenges, it’s easy to feel burdened, physically drained, and emotionally spent. In Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus offers an invitation that is both comforting and transformative: “Come to me.”

Jesus doesn’t promise a life free of difficulties. Instead, He promises rest—true, soul-deep rest that cannot be found in the fleeting pleasures or distractions of this world. The key to this rest lies in surrendering our burdens to Him and taking up His yoke.

In biblical times, a yoke was a wooden frame placed on the shoulders of oxen to pull heavy loads. When Jesus asks us to take His yoke, He’s inviting us to partner with Him. His yoke is not one of oppression or toil but of grace and guidance. It’s a yoke that fits perfectly because it’s custom-made for us. As we walk with Him, He shoulders the weight, teaching us how to navigate life with His gentleness and humility.

The rest Jesus offers isn’t merely physical—it’s spiritual. It’s a peace that transcends circumstances, rooted in the assurance of His presence and His care.

Personal Worship Option:

Pray: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your invitation to find rest in You. I come to You weary and burdened, longing for the peace and restoration only You can provide. Help me to surrender my cares and take up Your yoke. Teach me to walk with You in gentleness and humility, trusting Your guidance every step of the way. May I find true rest for my soul in Your presence. Amen

Read Psalm 4:8.

David said he was able to lie down in peace and sleep. Yet, much of his life he had been running from enemies. He had peace because he knew that God was protecting him. He was safe in God’s hands.

The world only has the here and now and what they can individually do. They do not have the peace of God, the One in absolute control, in their lives. They live in sin and hope that everything will turn out all right, so they toss and turn seeking rest that is not there.

Believers know that God is in control of every situation in their lives. They do not have to worry about any thing. One can lie down at night, laying down every situation in his life at the feet of Jesus, knowing that God is in control and will take care of him. All fear and worry can leave, so that he can have a peaceful rest.

Place all of your cares and worries into God’s hands. Trust that He is in control. Then when you go to sleep at night, you can rest assured that God is with you and will protect you.

Put all your trust in God and not the things of this world. This world will let you down and destroy you. God will build you up and give you life, eternal life.

I pray today that you will know the peace God offers; that you will put all of your trust in God; that you will allow God to take care of your worries and fear; and that God will give you a peaceful rest each night.

Read Leviticus 25:1-5.

The first commandment of the primary Ten is “You shall have no other gods before me.” That means God is to be the top priority in our life. God is to be the One who guides our life, the One we look to for direction in all aspects of life. It can be so easy to fall into a pattern and way of thinking that God (and the Church and being a Christian) is just one part of our life, along with several other parts or areas. We have family, job, hobbies and interests and whatever other aspects in which we might divide our life. For too many of us, God has little impact on dealing with those other parts of life. We get our “guidance” for those areas from other places.

Our focus Bible passages today encourage us to let God be our guide in all aspects of our life. Jesus said if we would “seek first the kingdom” everything else will fall into place. We will have what we need. What we learn as a part of his kingdom will teach us how to deal with everything in our life. And these often-quoted verses from Proverbs support that teaching. Rather than trusting in your own thinking that you have learned from this world, by placing your trust in God (making God your priority and primary guide) you gain the best “tour guide through life” you could possibly have.

Offer this prayer or one in your own words: God, I confess that I want to be in control of my life. I want to drive. Help me to turn the wheel over to you and let you drive. Amen.

Read Romans 12:1-2.

Paul spent the first eleven chapters of this letter writing deeply on beliefs we have about what God did through Jesus Christ and the implications of that for all people. At the beginning of chapter twelve, he makes a transition. It is as if he says “Now, based on all I have written so far, here is how we are to live our life as the people of Christ.” He begins this section encouraging us to offer our total self to God as a “living sacrifice…” We are to sacrifice our will and old ways to learn and live the will of God (the way of Jesus Christ).

In the invitation I give each Sunday, I invite everyone to either begin or deepen a relationship with Jesus Christ. This involves “unlearning” as well as learning what God’s will is for us. We should constantly be seeking to do away with some of the thinking and ways of this world that have become such a part of who we are throughout our life. At the same time, we are to constantly be seeking to discern the ways of God. Paul put it this way in verse two (of the CEB translation): “Don’t be conformed to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you can figure out what God’s will is - what is good and pleasing and mature.” Are there any new practices or habits you need to build into your daily schedule this year that will help better “figure out what God’s will is…”?

Offer this prayer or one in your own words:  Creating God, help me to get rid of my thinking and ways that are of this world so I can be more open and receptive to what your will is for my life.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Read Psalm 23.

What might 2025 be like for you if you let God “shepherd” you through it? Regardless of what 2025 holds for you - God leads us safely through as a shepherd would do for his sheep. What does that look like? Max Lucado sums it up well:

“You have a God who hears you, the power of love behind you, the Holy Spirit within you, and all of heaven ahead of you. If you have the Shepherd you have grace for every sin, direction for every turn, a candle for every corner, and an anchor for every storm. You have everything you need. “The LORD is MY shepherd, I have everything I need.”

Read Psalm 46.

The first words of this psalm announce its theme: God is our refuge, our fortress, and shelter. God is also our strength, our help. He is the one who deals with the trials and struggles surrounding us. Because God is our refuge and help, we have nothing to fear, even if tragedies and challenges are thrown our way.

Our faith is always being subjected to storms and earthquakes. Where can we find safety and security? Reread Psalm 46. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear.

There is a certain and trustworthy basis for our faith. God who created the earth including everything and made us is in control. His love for us never leaves. In all circumstances, no matter how terrible or frighten­ing, our unchanging God is our refuge and strength. In what ways has God been your refuge and strength?

God help us remember this Psalm when our worlds shake and our hearts tremble in fear. Shelter us, Jesus, in your strong, safe arms. Amen.
